Objective & Sustainability:
This is an on-going project (started in 1999) to systematically cover all provinces in order to operate on the existing cleft lip-palate cases and to train local staff to be able to take care of any future ones with the long term goal to eradicate cleft lips-palates in Laos .
Target Group:
Treatment of under-privileged children of poor peasant parents in need of urgent medical care in impoverished, remote and dangerous-to-access areas (due to unexploded ordinances “UXO” left behind by the Americans in Their War in Indochina )
Benefits:
By removing children's cleft lips-palates (which is a rather more time-consuming than “dangerous” operation), to help children physically and psychologically to become independent – and this includes their parents – throughout the entire country. At the same time medical staff in the provincial hospitals receive further qualified on-the-spot training for their personal satisfaction and professional advancement both of which ultimately benefit the wider population
Intention:
In the absence of a national government program to address these disastrous disabilities, so easily taken care of, it has become a matter of soldiering on to carry out the above objective by private initiative and funding
Support :
This private initiative has the support and backing from the Ministry of Health, Mahosot Hospital , Deputy Director Dr. Bounthaphany Bounxouei, and various international organizations, see attached
Next Project:
Oudomxay Province , north-western Laos, see task description and budget attached
